In Matthew, we see Jesus as the promised Messiah, if you will, The Lion of the tribe of Judah. If we were to think of a theme for this book, we would say its purpose would be to show Jesus as a fulfillment of that promised Messiah (His Kingship)."Gospel" means good news, and certainly this book of Matthew is a book of good news.
Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, it is written The passage referred to, and cited, is in ( Deuteronomy 8:3 ) the manner of citing it is what was common and usual with the Jews; and is often to be met with in the Talmudic writings; who, when they produce any passage of scripture, say ( bytkd ) , "as it is written".
Although all the Gospel writers quote the OT, Matthew includes nine proof texts unique to his Gospel (1:22 23; 2:15; 2:17 18; 2:23; 4:14 16; 8:17; 12:17 21; 13:35; 27:9 10) to drive home his basic theme: Jesus is the fulfillment of the OT predictions of the Messiah.

1) The Book of Matthew is one of four Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry on Earth. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John make up the four books of the Bible we call the Gospels. The word ‘gospel’ means ‘good news.’ Thus, in these four accounts of Jesus life, death, and resurrection, we have the good news of salvation come to man.
